TracFone, one of their famous services faced some new age dilemmas until 2013. Earlier on TracFone was limited to TracFone handsets which were preprogrammed by the manufacturer and hence the handsets were locked even in the latest GSM Models. And because TracFone SIM cards are locked to the handset while being programmed, they were incompatible to any other unlocked GSM handsets. Features like USB and Bluetooth were pre-modified by the manufacturer, preventing direct transfer of User Files. But by December 2013, TracFone customers would use Verizon Certified CDMA phones on TracFone Network through their newly unveiled ‘Bring Your Own Phone’ method. And by June 2015, using the ‘Bring Your Own Phone’ program, TracFone began allowing their customers to use Compatible or Unlocked GSM phones on their network.
A TracFone brand customer has the privilege to buy airtime units or minutes. This is possible provided the customer uses phones manufactured by Alcatel, Kyocera, LG, Samsung, Nokia, ZTE, Huawei, Motorola, Unimax etc. These are the list of TracFone Smartphones. The network and the coverage map the service uses are determined by the handset the user purchases. For example, phone models using Verizon or Sprint CDMA networks are designed in letter C on the model. AT&T or T-Mobile GSM networks have the letter G on the models.
So what exactly is TracFone Minutes? TracFone minutes or units are bought in blocks which vary in accordance to price with the number of minutes being purchased. For now, they offer two Airtime options for the customers; Pay as you go and Monthly plans.

Text messages and mobile web access are/is measured in fractions of units and hence, sending or receiving a text message will take away 0.3 units from the account of the User. In some other cases, TracFone models like Motorola EX124G will deduct 0.5 units from the account for sending or receiving texts. This was followed by older phone models earlier. So for every 0.3 units taken away from a User’s account, each minute of the mobile web access will take away 0.5 units which will be rounded up to the next whole minute.Earlier TracFone models charged up to 2.0 units per minute which are almost double to the units charged now. And this was for roaming outside the User’s home phone distance. But the present phones offer the single rate plan and hence per minute the plan will charge 1.0 units whatever be the location. All TracFone plans have expiration dates and extra airtime purchase will add an extra 90-day service with a one-year extension plan.
